Evaluation
In conclusion of the final outcome of the book cover
of 'The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4' that I have design has been a
very positive yet challenging experience. At the beginning of
the brief, I found it quite difficult on how to design a young
teenage book. As it either was too mature or too childish. It was quite hard to
capture the adolescence imagery for a young teenager would pick up
form the books shelves in stores. I believe the illustration
and doodles gave the book cover a really nice touch plus create a
rapport with other teenagers in high school. The emojis that I had added
on to the book cover, as got lots of positive feedback, as in this
generation most children know what emojis represent. They are mostly used
in the context of humor, which is what the book is like.
In the other book cover designs that I created, I
really wanted to use the watercolour splash background effect on the book
cover. Unfortunately, with the watercolour background made it harder and
difficult for me to work around the other illustration elements on the cover. I
believe it would make the book more attractive this way. But instead it made
the cover look too girly and aimed more for the girl audience. Even the border
with the stars and school equipment did not help this kind of appearance of the
book. I think that the colour choices that I made for the watercolour cover
made it less unisex.
With the red cover, I believe it was more appropriate
to develop that one in a younger children target audience. The reason of this
was, many of my peers saw the illustration to be too childish. The crayons on
the book also did not help with this, as it added in more of a toddler
appearance look. But the red dairy cover was good idea, most of my peers liked
the use of washed out red watercolour gave the book cover an effect of the diary
being used and written on.
In the end, I am very pleased with my final outcome
and design of my book cover. I am especially fond of the lined paper with the
doddles on it, as it gives it that high school appearance. Next is the colour
scheme of the book cover, the white, black, and gold made it look clean and in
a way sophisticated. Finally the font that was chosen, I believe these elements
bended well and the layout of the book is all scattered which is relatable to
the current generation of children. In addition, I got a lot of praise from
putting some funny emojis onto the book cover, as it gives a nice touch for
teenagers to read the book. I would like to do another competition like the
children’s book cover again, or maybe even try the non-fiction or fiction book
cover competition. I felt more confident with doing the children book cover as
there is more interesting ways to create it.
