Penguin Brief - Final Feedback & Final Changes to the designs

Feedback from Peers & Tutors on the Book covers

  • Majority of my peers preferred the white cover than the red cover. This is due to the colour red is quite harsh to the eye, even though the colour is vivid. The colour can represent a signal of danger. Whilst the white cover is a subtle colour with a calmer approach to the eye.
  • All peers and tutors agreed that the Illustrations are nice touch for a children's book. They all specifically like the illustration on the white cover, the red one some said the illustration is quite childish. As the book is aimed at at 13 to 14 year olds and even adults who read the book from a  young age.
  • On the white book cover most people preferred the lined paper background to the watercolour splash colours. The watercolour book cover does look too busy and chaotic especially with the various colours on the cover. The border of school equipment is creative but it can be much and the stars take away from the title of the book.
  • Majority of people preferred the back cover of the white book as a chalkboard than a diary. Some suggested to mix the blurb on the chalkboard as writing on the board is not as neat. And maybe add some chalk easer marks and doodles.
  • One of my tutors advised me to keep the lined paper background due to it reminds him of students doodling on the back of their school books. So adding more doodle illustrations will be even better.
  • Lots of the agreement came with the idea of adding emojis on the white book cover as it connects to the humour of the book. It will also make a connection with young teenagers in this generation to pick up the book.
  • Majority of the comments advised me to use the white cover as my final cover piece for the Penguin submission.
  • Most of the comments liked the pen being in the spine area.
  • The colour scheme of the white book cover is more appropriate to the book. (White, Gold, Black and so on.)

Images of some sketches I have done for school doodle. That peers & tutors advised me to put on the cover.

Taking the advice that I was given and slightly altered the white book covers to what was my guidance. Below is the new cover....

Above is the final design for my 'The Secret Diary if Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4' for the penguin competition. Overall, I am very happy and proud of the outcome of the book cover, I believe the feedback really helped me to improve my cover each time.

Student Starpack Awards 2017 | Ideas & Sketches of Packaging - based on Chinese takeaway

Idea - Based on Chinese Takeaway, 'New City Garden'
Within the brief, it outlines that the packaging can be based on any type of food choice. So i decided to base it off my aunty's Chinese takeaway located in Scotland. The name of the takeaway if called 'New City Gardens', in this takeaway they sell a variety of hot chinese food. They mostly use paper and foil packaging this is somewhat recyclable however could be improved.

I believe creating a plastic packaging container will be more appropriate for this type of hot food. As I want to create my container out of packaging, I am fortunate to own a 3D printer which can create this container for me. Plus the second hand users can reuse the containers again for lunch boxes and other stationary supplies.

Idea Sketches for new hot food packaging
Below are some quick sketches of some packaging design that I may want to create, I have also used some of my previous templates that I have retrieve from my GCSE Graphic products. There are some examples of these types of templates and sketches.

Penguin Brief - Redesigned Adrian Mole Book Covers

After taking advice from both peers and Illustrators, I tried to incorporate their elements to my children book cover. Below are the redesign book covers that I have created.

The above book cover is a redesign version of the previous white book cover. I kept the school equipment border, but took away some elements. This includes the Backpack, and sharpener. These were replaced with different coloured stars instead, making book appearance more eye catching. Then I also made some adjustments with the title of the cover book, such as making the typeface gold and having a shadow behind it. This creates a 3D effect, this will make the book more eye catching for children to pick up. I also added some emoji stickers onto the book as the book is a humorous/comedic story. Then for the back of the book, I put the blurb in a book vector (as it would indicates Adrain Mole's diary). Then the pen line is joined to the pen in the spine area, which presents the spine information.

Feedback on a teenager aged 14
As this sort of genre in this type of book is targeted for young children aged between 11 -15 years old. I asked my brother who is roughly around that age group if he would pick up this book if he saw it. His advice was that it is very eye catching, however, it the appearance of the book looks more catered to 12 year old girls than both genders. Especially the colour of the watercolours are too rainbow coloured and has a feminine appearance. But he does like the style of font used, as it is all messy and un-tidy. The stars also take the eye away from the title and the other elements on the page. He likes how there is a illustration of the boy Adrian Mole, so children in that age group can relate.

Aftermath of the feedback from my brother. Below are some images of experimenting with changing the background of the book cover. I tried to change the background from the colourful splashes to lined paper, thus indicating education. I have one with the border and the other without. The one with, has a very aesthetic appearance whilst the one without looks too plain. But the title does stand out and reaches more to the eye.

The image below is a picture of the back of the other design for the back blurb for the white book cover. Instead of the book/diary vector, I have replaced this with a chalkboard, again referring back to the school education background. There are also emoji stickers to help bring out the childlike appearance to the back cover. For the spine is is kept the same as a lot of peers and the illustrator I showed it to said they liked it.

For the red cover design, again I have slightly changed some objects and elements due to the unfavourable feedback. I have made the typeface title more bigger and eye catching, as it was not as noticeable in the previous design. Next the photo film - I replaced the dark silhouettes to illustration of the young boy pulling various facial expression (indicating comedy). I have rearranged the British elements on the page, to a more cluttered and scatter appearance - refers to the untidiness of the boy character. Some random coins and a few crayons in various colours to make the cover more appealing to the child eyes.

Student Starpack Awards 2017 | Inspiration for Takeaway Delivery Pack designs

Inspiration existing takeaway designs
Before starting to sketch our the takeaway packaging that I would like to produce for the chosen cuisine. The overall chosen cuisine that I will be designing a packaging for is 'Chinese food'. I believe this would be a good experiment process to commence with as most Chinese takeaway do not do much sustainable packaging for their food. Or simple people do not know how to recycle the type of packaging from a Chinese cuisine.

It is also fortunate that my aunty also knowns a Chinese takeaway shop that I could potential take pictures of my packaging in that kind of environment. Plus the most challenging aspect of this brief is thinking of what kind of materials I can use to make the food clean and hygienic for the consumers to eat out of.

Chinese food, is quite a challenging food to balance with packaging design. As majority of the food is either super oily or greasy. It would be a good idea to make a packaging that stops greasy from seeping out of the takeaway materials.

Therefore, I have looked into some packaging designs that mostly absorb the grease. Below are some examples I will help me guide me not only on the design, but the construction and materials:

Burger Gourmet Kitchen

Their takeaway packaging is very nice in design and material. Mostly all the packaging is mostly made out of paper material. For the burger it is more thicker card board, which keeps the burger in contact/hold its structure. What I really like is when it is open, all the sides fold open out.

However, this kind of packaging is not good as out cannot be reused for other food purposive.

Stick 'n' Sushi

Within Stick 'n' Sushi' packaging design, I really like the design and the colour scheme they have used. The way that the sushi boxes are stacked up is very interesting layout. However, again this kind of packaging is not as suitable. It has that problem of not a secondary use of for other foods.

General Chinese takeaway packaging
For the Chinese takeaway, I found this packaging online. The design of this certain packaging is very interesting from its why of structure and construction.

I really like the dividers within the packaging as the user can have a choice to eat what they desire.

With the construction of the packaging, it uses string to attach and hold together the different takeaway boxes together.

The shape of the packaging is really unique and it is a great shape to work with multiple dividers as shown above.

I would like to incorporate the dividers can of idea to my version of takeaway packaging. But the way it is used to carry for transportation isn't suitable to strong enough.

I would like to come up or find a better yet appropriate handle that would be good to use as reusable.

From this inspiration research I can start planning how and what packaging templates I would like to experiment with. Most of the inspire packaging that I have done research with mainly use paper materials. These paper materials are ablate withstand oil and greasy substances, as most takeaway food contain a lot of oily foods. I believe I will research some plastics which can with stand heat and food hygiene. With the plastic material, it will be able to withstand damage plus will be more durable when the packaging will have a second use for the second owner.

Student Starpack Awards 2017 | Research on Food Delivery Packs for Takeaways

Research on Takeaway Delivery Packaging

Food packaging - packaging for food. A package provides protection, tampering resistance, and special physical, chemical, or biological needs.

Functions
Packaging and package labeling have several objectives:

  • Physical protection - The food enclosed in the package may require protection from, among other things, shock, vibration, compression, temperature, bacteria, etc
  • Barrier protection - A barrier from oxygen, water vapor, dust, etc., is often required. Permeation is a critical factor in design. Some packages contain desiccants or oxygen absorbers to help extend shelf life. Modified atmospheres or controlled atmospheres are also maintained in some food packages. Keeping the contents clean, fresh, and safe for the intended shelf life is a primary function.
  • Containment or agglomeration - Small items are typically grouped together in one package to allow efficient handling. Liquids, powders, and granular materials need containment.
  • Information transmission - Packages and labels communicate how to use, transport, recycle, or dispose of the package or product. Some types of information are required by governments.
  • Marketing - The packaging and labels can be used by marketers to encourage potential buyers to purchase the product. Package design has been an important and constantly evolving phenomenon for several decades. Marketing communications and graphic design are applied to the surface of the package and (in many cases) the point of sale display.
  • Security - Packaging can play an important role in reducing the security risks of shipment. Packages can be made with improved tamper resistance to deter tampering and also can have tamper-evident features to help indicate tampering. Packages can be engineered to help reduce the risks of package pilferage; some package constructions are more resistant to pilferage and some have pilfer-indicating seals. Packages may include authentication seals to help indicate that the package and contents are not counterfeit. Packages also can include anti-theft devices, such as dye packs, RFID tags, or electronic article surveillance tags, that can be activated or detected by devices at exit points and require specialized tools to deactivate. Using packaging in this way is a means of retail loss prevention.
  • Convenience - Packages can have features which add convenience in distribution, handling, stacking, display, sale, opening, reclosing, use, and reuse.
  • Portion control - Single-serving packaging has a precise amount of contents to control usage. Bulk commodities (such as salt) can be divided into packages that are a more suitable size for individual households. It also aids the control of inventory: selling sealed one-liter bottles of milk, rather than having people bring their own bottles to fill themselves.
Recycling of food packaging
After use, organic matter that is still in the food packaging needs to be separated from the packaging. This may also require rinsing of the food packaging.
Food packaging should no longer contain any organic matter (organic matter, if any, needs to be placed in a biodegradable waste bin or be buried in a garden). Since no trace of biodegradable material is best kept in the packaging before placing it in a trash bag, some packaging also needs to be rinsed.

To commence this brief, I first decided to explore and find some research based on existing takeaway packaging. I found it challenging to obtain this information specifically based on takeaway packaging, so the closest research I could find was food packaging in general.

By obtaining information which is similar to takeaway packaging, I can understand why and how these types of packaging is specifically made for their purpose. With the information that I have gathered above I can see which way I can produce my takeaway packaging design.

To begin I will sketch out some templates of packaging designs, especially when I have some a booklet of packaging designs template that I did previously in GCSE Graphic Products.

Once I have decided on the suitable packaging size, and shape for the decide cuisine that I will approach.

Student Starpack Awards 2017 | The Brief

The Brief - Sustainable Expanding Food Delivery Packs for Takeaways | Sponsored by RPC Group

Introduction
With the increase and accessibility of food on the go and the range of oriental and global food alternatives available, there is a requirement for effective and sustainable food packaging solutions. Customers are now able to use speci c media and mobile phone apps not only to locate food outlets but also to read and order from menus prior to collection and access nutritional and contents information.

The Brief
To design an innovative and creative solution to exible, sustainable packaging for takeaway food (choose your own food takeaway outlet). Explore the production techniques and possibilities of plastics. Ensure through design, shape/format/materials a solution that will work practically in allowing the outlets to be able to store containers effectively before use and allow for easy and fast lling and sealing.

The consumer needs to be able to access contents safely (if hot), dispose of packaging easily or alternatively the packaging could have a secondary use.

Points to consider:
• Flexibility/adaptability of pack
• Storage before use (space is often at a premium)
• Easy and secure lling
• Secondary use for consumer
• Serving potential (you could add some form of utensils within your design) • Visual/graphic images or colour options for outer pack surface.
• Disposability

Materials to be used
Rigid plastic construction using polypropylene, polyethylene, PET or a combination if needed. Ensure components are separable to aid recycling.

The reason of this choice of brief...
This brief is in the area which I have an interest of, in Graphic Design I would like to explore more into the Graphic product and packaging category. I believe I will do well in this brief as I have some background knowledge in packaging and graphic product which will help me very well in this project.

Penguin Brief - Feedback and Changes of Designs

Feedback on Cover designs

  • I like the colour scheme of the red diary design and the wash out effect does show the use of it.
  • I like the red design, however, everything on the cover seems to organised and arranged. As Adrian Mole is a young spotty teenager, I believe he would not be as tidy. Try and make the cover more disorder and messy.
  • The photo film is too strong for the cover page. Especially the silhouette, it looks to much like a detective story than a story for a teenager.
  • The children may be scared to pick up the book as the silhouette is quite scary for a child to pick up.
  • Change the silhouette to an illustration of a cartoon of Adrian Mole, will look more approachable.
  • Both typefaces suit the book cover and aims at the target audience.
  • The shovel and pipe axe is quite off putting for a child audience, its best to get rid of that or replace with some else.
  • I agree the white version of the book cover does but an off putting appearance to the children, it is quite intimidating. Again another mystery book than a children book.
  • Add more British elements to the books look interesting and relates to the story.
  • I like the border of the white cover book, its very colour and eye catching.
  • I like the use of watercolours splashed on the book cover. But it might be too girly for young boys to grab the book. Maybe something more gender neutral?
  • The school equipment border is interesting keep that feature
  • I like the pen in the spine area, suits the cover photo.
  • Maybe add some funny faces on the books, as Adrian Mole is a comedy book. The covers that you have made are too serious for my opinion.
  • The colours on the white book cover is good, not so sure about the colourful splashed look - Adrian Mole is not artistic type of person.
  • Add some nerdy elements on the book cover, broken glasses, games consoles, books, maths etc.
With these feedback from both peers and existing illustrators, I will follow these advice and redesign both my book covers.
