OUGD602 | Light Night Experience

Light Night Experience

Celebrating the diverse and thriving creativity of Leeds, Light Night Leeds is an annual free multi-arts and light festival that takes over Leeds city centre for two nights in October.

This year, Light Night celebrates the city of Leeds and its people, starting with a vibrant illuminated parade led by the fabulous Leeds West Indian Carnival as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations, and with over 40 events across the city centre.

Leeds Liberty Dock - The Moon

There was a recreation of a spectacular full moon that hover over the water of the Liberty Dock. This replica of the moon was made out of detailed images captured during a NASA space mission. The artist Luke Jerram's extraordinary installation will bathe the area in a lunar glow.

Luke said: “The installation is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and a surround sound composition."

“From the beginning of human history, the moon has acted as a ‘cultural mirror’ to our beliefs, understanding and ways of seeing. Over the centuries, the moon has been interpreted as a god and as a planet."

“It has been used as a timekeeper, calendar and to aid night time navigation. Throughout history the moon has inspired artists, poets, scientists, writers and musicians the world over."

Measuring seven metres in diameter, the recreation of the moon features imagery of the lunar surface captured by NASA’a Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which first entered lunar orbit on June 23, 2009.

Internally lit, each centimetre of the structure represents approximately five kilometres of the moon’s surface and the piece will be suspended over the water.

Luke added: “This will be the first time the public will be able to see the moon in all its detail and also to see the far side of the moon so it should look stunning."

Millennium Square - History of Leeds

In Millennium Square projected with illumination of the history of Leeds. Like starting with how Leeds began and then evolved over the years. For example: war, technology, circus, carnivals, football, mills and so on.

Town Hall - Mannequins

Within the Town Hall in Leeds was a performance of illumination and mannequins. The intention of this entertainment from my interpretation was that the mannequins presented us in society. The colour of the mannequins were white for the projector to beam faces in the mannequins these were either: eye balls, distorted poker faces etc. Then the background lights will light up the Town Hall to describe the environment we live in some lights were bizarre and eccentric. This implies how our society works and how we humans react to the changes.

OUGD602 | The Design Kids Lecture | Talk by Frankie from Australia

What is 'The Design Kids'
The Design Kids is a global community of student & graduate Graphic Designers.

Who is Frankie?
Frankie Ratford is from Australia, and is TDK Director
Frankie’s name has been photoshopped into ‘Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego’ more than once. She’s fascinated with the intersection between design, travel and business, and likes to do five things at the same time. She has worked as a print designer, a lecturer, an intern, a blogger, a freelancer, a book binder and a bunch of other design related stuff. She’s lived in 13 cities, in 25+ houses and is currently road tripping around the world for six years, right now in Europe building the TDK empire (lols). She started The Design Kids in 2009 and launched with a market stall in the front yard with some mates and a DJ. She is a sunny Sagittarius who splits her time between her 60’s shack in rural Tasmania and catching planes to far away (warmer) places.

What are Frankie's steps for reaching her goal?
  • 'Get Inspired'
  • 'Get Involved'
  • 'Get Hired'
Frankie's Motto
'Ikigai' is a Japanese concept that means 'a reason for being'

How did Frankie get to were she is?
Frankie had multiple jobs these include: screen printing, working for the Studio 'FROST' volunteering and so on. Even though these jobs weren't the best they gave her good experience for the future. Frankie also loves to travel so she decide to take her work with what she loves to do. Thus positioning her doing talks for studios and university students.

Therefore she is now travelling around the U.K to teach students her experience throughout the years of being a Graphic Designer in the industry.

'Hey kids! For the final part of the #TDKeurope tour, we will be hitting the UK in the fun bus AKA the TDK van (designed by the mega talented Gabby Lord) doing lectures and workshops. Our focus is strong industry engagement – AKA how to meet professionals and how to get a job, how to get involved and whats happening around the world within design right now.'

Final Advice
'GET INVOLVED!!'
'Find that one thing that you are good at and passionate about to succeed'.
