Study Task - Presentation Overview

During this session, we did presentations about how we would see ourselves in 10 Years time. After seeing all my peers presentations I was inspired by some of their aims in the future and I though that I could of added those points into my powerpoint.

Winning an Art award in the future

Lots of my peers wanted for a personal/professional achievement would be winning an art award. I was inspire by this as I also want to win one to show my hard work in Graphic Design is successful.

Lots of experiences

A few of my peers explained how they got some work experience in Graphic Design. This has inspired me to do something similar, as work experience in the job you want to do in the future is important.

Another Course to study (Postgraduate)

Some of my peers told in their presentation, how they might study something else because they wasn't sure if this was (graphic Design) was the right choice of job in the future. So they might study something else that they were interested in the future. i.e - Psychology. So I might search for course that I might be interested in.

Learning Graphic Design Internationally

Some of my peers are from different countries which are studying in LCA for Graphic Design or have lived in a different countries and talked about their experience and time there. It was interesting to see other peers backgrounds, it influences me to travel and learn new and different experiences in these countries.

Study Task 02 - Why am I here - What do I want to learn?

Identify and explain 5 reasons why you chose to study on this course?
  • To learn Graphic Design, because I have heard so much positive review about this University from so many people. I also searched up the top 10 Art Universities and this was the one of them. Whilst reading through the prospective of Graphic Design course, it had what I wanted learn and do in the future.
  • To expand my skills and knowledge on this course. LCA is well known for its amazing equipment so with this I can explore and investigate these skills and knowledge and apply them here.
  • Inspired by other Graphic Designers. I always loved Art, but Graphic Design really stuck with me as the course is quite diverse and I could combine different media together.
  • To study what I enjoy doing and my talent. I've always loved doing Art subjects, in highs school I did Art and Graphic Products, and in A-levels I did Art and Graphic Design. But my stronger side compared to the two, was Graphics and my family/friends always said that I should go with something that I enjoy doing as I do so well in it.
  • And to be successful hopefully in this profession. I want to learn about Graphic Design more so I can do things that my inspirational Graphic designers do and hopefully to publish my own artwork in public.
Identify and explain 5 things that you want to learn during your time on the course?
  • Advertising, is more diverse job to do and society has advertisements everywhere.
  • Printing, learning a new skill will be helpful, if I wanted to specialised in anything else.
  • Packaging, I've done some in high school, but it could be helpful if I knew more and create some because I did enjoy it.
  • Branding, learning can help me expand more on advertising.
  • Multimedia, working with Multimedia can demonstrate that I am very flexible in any job situation.
Identify and explain 5 things that you think are your strengths?
  • Drawing, if I have an idea I can quickly picture it and draw it out and my sketching is quite good.
  • Photoshop/Illustrator, I had some experience using these Adobe softwares in  A-level, so I know how to make vectors, use effects etc.
  • Essay Writing, as I did English combine in A-level, I know how to plan my essay and pick out the most important quotes which are significant to the text question.
  • Organised, I believe I am quite organised with my work, I make a list of things I have to do and then I will tick them off once I've completed it. I also write deadlines on my calendar so I know when things need to be done.
  • Creativity, I believe I have a good amount of creativity or imagination in my mind, however it can be a bit ambiguous sometimes.
Identify and explain 5 things you would like to improve?
  • Time management, sometimes I procrastinate with my work. This is a bit of a problem as I don't get more work done than I wanted to.
  • Confidence, I'm a very shy and quiet person. I don't really like speaking in front of a class or small group either because I don't think I'm able to present my work verbally well and I get quite pressured when I have a lot of eyes on me. But I am improving a bit from being in this course for a month.
  • Researching skills, I think I am average. But I could be better, its difficult for me to find some resources like books in Libraries.
  • Speaking more, again I am a very shy and quiet person and I'm not fond of speaking in front of a lot of people.
  • Skills in Photoshop, even though I have had some experience with Photoshop. I don't think I know everything about it.
Identify and explain 5 things that inspire you?
  • Other Graphic Designers/Companies work, while doing a task in LCA about different Studios. I did some of my own research as the one Simon suggested really interested me and made me think I wanted to try some of those.
  • LCA Peers work, inspire me a lot. When we do our crits and show each others work, I get inspired to get better and improve. Also I like looking at other peoples artwork.
  • Music, like music videos or album covers inspire me as I love they are laid out and presented.
  • Exhibitions/Galleries, influence me as my artwork could be in this.
  • Adverts in society and TV, they are everywhere in public. I look at them for some inspiration if I have a studio brief or study task to do.
Identify 5 examples of design that demonstrate your field of creative interest?
  • Andrew Bannecker (Graphic Designer)

  • Julian Opie

  • Roy Lichtenstein

  • Ai WeiWei

  • Banksy

Professional visit - Alphabet

During today's lesson we had a professional visit from past students from Leeds College of Art and they had build up their own studio and company called 'Alphabet'.

'Alphabet' is a studio which professionalises in branding and creative directions. This studio is based in Leeds and they came to talk about their journey into being where they are now. It was very inspiring and interesting how 3 of them kept in touch and decide to build on this studio together. Highlighting they have people who specialise in different things and are adaptable in any task.

Here are some images below of their work

Letterpressing induction

In today's induction we learned how to letterpress. We had to select a quote which is not to long to print the lettering on our piece of paper. The quote I choose to do was the one by Audrey Hepburn "Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible". During the process of putting the individual letters on the plate was quite difficult as the way they were layout in the box was the letterpressing alphabet. And when I started to put ink on to my letterpress and printed some letters where the wrong way round i.e p, b and looked like a d or q.

Overall, it was quite successful. If I practice more of this in my spare time, I can use it for other project or briefs.
